The Flying Mermaid ★

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a flight attendant on long flights? What is it like to work with an airline that operates only, or mostly, 10-16 hour long flights? Have you ever experienced such a flight yourself or do you know a flight attendant for whom this is everyday life?

I am one of them.

I got my first job with a large, long-haul airline when I was only nineteen. Airlines flying directly to the other side of the world are usually (but not always) prestigious and rich, and getting a job with them is a real feat for experienced, and especially a person who doesn't have a hundred years of experience in aviation, and in fact, only recently entered the world of flight attendants. It's easy to guess that the job offer in the prestigious, national airline of one of the richest countries in the world was a great surprise for me and a huge success, which I achieved as an aviation beginner and a person at the door of adulthood, defeating in the recruitment process experienced crew of such elite airlines as Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways or Oman Air. You can imagine boundless joy, gratitude and disbelief all rolled into one.

This is how my adventure with airlines operating long haul flights began. First with one airline, then with another, I operated did hundreds of over-ten-hour flights in one direction, covering routes from point A to point B, around the globe. It's easy to guess that such distances are not flown by small or medium-sized planes, which due to technical parameters would have to land several times along the way, for example to refuel. Such long flights are performed by big machines, appropriately adapted to it. And since there are huge aircraft, there are also many, many more passengers on board, much more work, much more responsibility and a much bigger cabin crew team... In other words, a completely different reality than in the short-haul airlines.

Generally speaking, the work of a flight attendant in long haul airlines is significantly different from the work of a flight attendant in low cost airlines, regional airlines or all other airlines that don't operate long-distance flights, but only short haul and medium haul (short-range and medium-range) . As I mentioned before, these are huge planes, huge numbers of passengers, more potential sources of danger, which means for times more work and eyes and ears around the head. In addition, most importantly, the main difference between the flights of low cost carriers, regio etc, and long-haul airlines is that the duration of the first is on average two, three or even four times shorter than the other, so it looks completely different. Different in-flight service structure, and flight attendants not only have a greater range of duties, but also enjoy privileges that their colleagues don't have, working in other types of companies.

Whoever flew at least once with low-cost, charter, regional or national airlines on short routes, certainly encountered the reality of "we will give you water, feed you, but first pay for it"... Exactly. The cabin crew of these airlines (not all, but most of them) run on board with a cart full of products for sale and a terminal, because nothing is for free and the service is completely paid. Fortunately, long haul airlines offer a full, free service of meals, desserts and drinks for all passengers, and even several services, the number of which depends on the length of the flight. And great praise to them for that. Thanks to this, we, flight attendants, are provided with warm-up and cardio on board, but we are not shining with food bills. As for me, a couple of such services for several hundred people seated in several dozen rows in one flight are a perfect opportunity for entertainment and exercise of the muscles of the legs and abdomen, which is pure pleasure 😉

If it seems like it's over, then couldn't be more wrong. One of the advantages of working on long flights is... Time for yourself. Time to relax. Due to the fact that this type of flights last mostly 10-16 hours, there is more time for everything, it's easier to plan duties, and there is a time between services when the crew have a longer or shorter (often longer) time for themselves, when they can sit down calmly, rest, eat, talk or read their favorite book, which is something the staff of short flights cannot enjoy, where they usually don't even have time for five minutes of rest, and meals are eaten on the run, because work is heavy and time is short.

About resting... A privilege that short-haul flight attendants may forget - SLEEP! Long-haul crew are lucky in this aspect. Work, work, and in the middle of the flight a warm bed, where you can forget about everything, rest, sleep well for even a few hours, the best reward and, together with a break for food, these are the most liked and awaited moments of the flight, which give power and boost mood for the rest of the trip... After all, who doesn't like a little relaxation, right?

And finally the best, that is... Travel and layovers all over the world! This is an aspect that many working in this profession dream about and almost everyone who would like to start flying does too. Traveling and visiting the entire globe is also, in fact, one of the main things people associate with being a flight attendant. And these are the luxuries and privileges of being in the most distant corners, in a different country every day, or sunbathing on the most exotic beaches, the luxuries of flight attendants flying around the world, that's, the long-haul ones.

That is why I love working in huge airplanes the most of all, for which circling half the world in one flight is not a problem, because I never have enough of traveling, sightseeing and enjoying the beauty of our planet 🥰

In short, flight attendant and flight attendant, airline and airline, each specific and completely different, the job can be very different, but if you are a person who really loves to fly, any opportunity to do this profession is a blessing.

After many requests of my readers, I decided to create a memoir about a short but very intense time when I had the opportunity and pleasure to live in the capital of the United Kingdom, where Big Ben towers and the Thames meanders silver, what means a city no other than London itself.
If you want to know my opinion on living in the center of the UK and you are curious what is left in my head, whether I miss it and would like to come back or not, I invite you to read more.

When my plane landed in the UK, I was welcomed by the downpour and the wind, which almost took my head off, turned my favorite umbrella into a broken skeleton, and a passing car gave me a shower from a street puddle. Not a big surprise, because Great Britain is famous for its misty and wet aura, and rainfall is not uncommon there, but getting wet to the skin on as hello was not the most pleasant option, I expected a bit more favorable weather. Honestly, I was even a little scared, because what if "how the beginning (or actually the first moments), such a whole"? Could my whole stay on English soil be one big failure that even heaven will cry over in despair?

Luckily, it didn't happen that way, and a not very interesting beginning didn't mean a bad continuation at all, but let's say it one by one.

At the beginning, I admit, it was hard. It's hard to adapt, to get used to the climate, which I'm not a fan of, because I belong to people who love heat, and the warmer the better, as long as the beach is nearby, and quite a cool, humid and windy climate is not what I feel best physically and mentally. I used to love water droplets falling from the sky, now the only thing left of this love is the admiration of the fog, which by the way I really like taking pictures of (adds a lot of artistic magic, I recommend it!), Maybe I will even use one of them for future blog posts. And here... Not only is there no beach, there is a long way to the sea (by the way I recommend Brighton, a great relaxation base for people living in London who feel best surrounded by sand and waves hitting the shore), but also the temperature about much lower than what corresponds to thermophile, rainy mornings, showers from the sky without any warning and icy (in my opinion) evenings... Sorry, this is our climate, but not mine, unfortunately.

Due to the fact that we have such a climate, or rather they have a climate, my compatibility with the British and all local people who have lived in the area for a long time, left a lot to be desired. I am dressed from head to toe, they are in sweaters or short sleeves. They are wearing light jackets, I am wearing a coat, buttoned up to the neck. They are wearing light clothes and I am in a scarf. They are in sneakers, I am in boots. The only occasions when, despite the constant feeling of being cold, I shed my undersuits during photo sessions. Oh so, so much of my British blood. So you can certainly easily imagine the faces of locals seeing a teddybear on the street.

Luckily, my climate preferences are the only drastic difference between me and the British society.
It has been known for a long time that England is one great ethnic and cultural mix, which I had the opportunity to experience not only in everyday life, in shops and on the streets, but also at work. Such a configuration of "a little of everyone" is something that I really like and appreciate, also it's a huge plus, especially since London is a city most saturated with geographical vibrations and you can hear all languages and dialects from around the world there. What is a great YES to me, because I simply love such multicultural atmosphere. Such a small sample of the entire globe in one place.

It is obvious, but perhaps not necessarily obvious to someone who doesn't live traveling, that the enormous advantage of living in England is the complete lack of language barriers. You don't have to worry that someone doese speak English, that someone won't understand what you are talking about. Not only that, as I mentioned above, people also speak many other languages, which allows not only to communicate freely and possibly help in the event of a lack of understanding, but also is a great opportunity to upgrade your language skills thanks to friendly relations with foreigners living in the area.

In the end, I wouldn't be myself if I didn't mention something that impressed me a lot. In the "airport zone", that is within a few kilometers from the big airport, there are... Free buses going every few minutes. In fact the free ride is only available on the route a few km from the airport, later you have to scan the public transport card, but it's still a great advantage. This is probably due to the mass of tourists who use public transport from the airport to reach nearby hotels, but local people also often use free travel. Imagine what a relief it is, to work at the airport and have free bus taking you to the terminal's door. Couldn't be any better!

There are still a lot of things that I liked and disliked, that made me smile and led to liimitless irritation and wondering how such things have the right to exist at all, but that's a different story and maybe I will mention it again sometime, but no longer in this post.

Generally... I liked London itself and the life there too. It was not bad, although I felt that I was still cold and certain things surprised me very much, I can say from a distance of time that it was good. I like this city, the atmosphere there, the infrastructure, and above all the communication / transport network, both above-ground and underground, which makes life easier and from every point of the city you can get to another in the blink of an eye, for what a big respect and hopefully more places in the world follow this path, because rather no one likes to have problems with moving, and the extensive metro and train network is a real relief from it.

So London is still one of my favorite places, I am happy to come back, but rather for quite short stays, trips because I prefer to stay permanently somewhere where there are... A bit warmer temperatures 😉

Some people love to meddle in somebody's affairs, get into someone else's bed, wallet... and many other things. Get into somebody else's personal life and be where they'retotally unwanted. As if they were writing someone's very detailed biography.
If just like me, you are heartily fed up with those who, despite suggestions and evasions, don't understand the message "Mind your own business", this short post is just for you.

Whoever knows me at least a little knows well that breaking into my private life by people with whom I'm not in any way close, getting into it without invitation, violating my personal space and trying to get any and every information without the slightest scruples and the shortest moment wondering if I agree to it at all is the best and most effective way to boil my blood and join the blacklist of people I have lost all respect for, and if a nosy creature tries hard, it can be just as quickly promoted to the top of the list of people I sincerely don't like because, well, to the great surprise of the spies, I don't agree to digging into my life, and I say big NO to sniffing and violating my privacy.

Many people think that standing up to such individuals is something bad, rude or mean, so whether they like it or not, they succumb to further pressure and still allow behaviors that they would like to get rid of their surroundings once and for all. However, no, it's not bad at all, putting a dot on the "i" and setting boundaries is not rudeness, it's not a sin or (on the contrary to unlimited breaking into someone's private or even intimate zone) an crying shame. On the contrary, telling such a person the truth to their face may be the only effective solution... Or not, if it's a completely hopeless case.

Remember that you don't have to confess to strangers, you don't have to explain all your relationships, feelings, earnings, plans, dreams, personal preferences and a whole lot of other things that strangers should stay away from. You don't have to justify yourself and answer questions that shouldn't be there at all. You don't have to apologize. You have the right to say a definite NO and set boundaries that must not be exceeded by those you don't allow of your free will.

Allusions don't work, the topic changes and end of conversations don't work too? Make things clear. By blocking toxic meddling, you save your privacy. You don't have to accept this breaking into your life.

Say NO.

Would you be surprised if I write that I would never expect to live in Turkey and that if anyone had told me something like that a year ago, I would have thought they were crazy?
Probably not, because I wrote and said exactly the same thing when I moved to every country I've lived in before... But well...
My surprise at the situation is not fake at all, it's purely authentic. Especially that according to my perfect plan, I was still supposed to live richly and colorfully in the kingdom of splendor called Dubai, but this is another fairy tale, about it at another time... And yet life surpised me incredibly again, but it was sooo good surprise!

So my dear readers...

If you have been reading my blog and have been following me on social media for a long time, or maybe even from the very beginning, and you know what I do professionally, you also know that traveling around the world winding new nests is nothing extraordinary in my case, and the next move to another country is no surprise, and something totally expected, considering it a matter of time when I pop up again with information about my new home.

But if you are new here and you don't know my skills yet... Yes, know that I am a veteran of moving from country to country, from continent to continent, and if it was could, life would probably carry me even further.

The beginning of the year is probably my standard time of posting my life, career and localization news to social media and blog.

A little reminder of how colorful it is with me:

At the beginning of 2019, I informed you about the fact that I moved to Venice

* meantime there was also a move to Barcelona *

In early 2020, you might have glimpsed information about a new chapter of my life in Dubai

 In early 2021...

...And in early 2021, my wings carried me to TURKEY.

As you can easily guess, there are only two reasons that could bring me to Turkish territory indefinitely: Blind love or work.
I quickly clarify any doubts, no, no local man is responsible for my move to this country, but only (or even) my irresistible desire and need to explore the world and travel, combined with the pursuit of the greatest possible career development and gaining a lot of new experiences, which will enrich me as a human being with priceless values and skills, and above all, open my mind even more.

Turkish life.

It sounds like an advertisement for an oriental trip or a romantic and dramatic Turkish telenovela with action in beautiful Istanbul or another local city.
As it turns out, in my case, "Turkish life" is not a catchy title of a book, film or an encouraging name for a tourist attraction, but... Real life, local community, culture, customs, climate, work and everyday life, which day by day I will become more and more integral part, until maybe one day I will feel like a local, at home... The first step has already been taken, who knows what is waiting around the corner, what my future will bring.

I look into the future with hope, but I am constantly faced with questions and doubts as to whether I will be happy here in the long run, whether I will arrange my life the way I want it, will I be satisfied with my current job, will I want to stay longer and longer or after a few months I will feel the need to leave and return to something more familiar, both privately and professionally?
There are many questions, and only time will give me the real answers.

There will definitely be other posts about living, working a traveling in Turkey, so if you are interested, stay with me 💛

Happy Women's Day to all of us girls! 💜

Today's post will not be too long, I won't write much, I'll leave here just a few words that are worth remembering and going through life with them, and it will certainly be more pleasant and mentally much easier.

Here's a little bit of women's happiness in a nutshell:

Let us believe in ourselves, be grateful for every new day, for every new experience and for each lesson, even the painful one, that strengthens us and makes us better and stronger mentally.

Let's not worry about other people's opinions about ourselves, which are usually worth as much as the statement that dark chocolate is better than white and does not mean the truth about us.

Let's not take every malice personally, and laugh in the face of our haters.

Let's be happy and smile, it works on our enemies like holy water on a vampire.

Let's not listen to the empty and meaningless talks in the series "It's not proper for a woman to...", because yes, it is proper.

Instead of gossiping, plotting and harming each other, let's support each other, because a strong woman is the one who supports other women and does not desire to destroy them.

Let's be positive and share the joy, who knows whose life we can change.

Let's not cry for the guys who disappeared, cheated, hurt... There are plenty of fish in the sea.

Let's not be ashamed of our body and let us love it, because it is our only true home.

Let's dare to speak out loud about our feelings, pain and weaknesses, everyone has them, it's okay.

Let's perceive all the colors, not only in black and white, because life is beautiful.

Let's be happy and conquer the world!

Ex airlines are like ex boyfriends. You leave them, break this air romance, because it didn't give you satisfaction or satisfy your needs... And when they are replaced by a better one, they come back, show up unexpectedly, asking you to come back and to take you to their side, offer exactly what the lack of made you walk away without looking back too much.

Just so the story is not too boring, they always do it at the best possible time. When you are on contract with another company and cannot cancel it. At least not yet. Just to mess with your mind and wake up the part that would just like to take what a shadow of the past is offering now.

As you know, my several-year-long and I must admit, the rapidly developing international career of a flight attendant, was treated extremely brutally by a colleague called coronavirus, which for almost the entire year 2020 was filled with a pain of being grounded and lack of flights shared with hundreds of thousands of other cabin crew members around the world and prayed let it all end, the plague was forgotten, and life, especially this beloved aviation life, returned to normal.

Unfortunately, this suspension didn't last for days, weeks, or even months. This numbness lasted a lot longer, in fact, long enough for me to stop seeing my future in this profession in any bright colors. I just doubted. However, despite everything, I still had the power, I didn't give up and I did not cancel my dreams of continuing my adventures, travel and flying. I was still working, looking for new solutions, where it would be better, how it would be better, with whom it would be better, in which country it would be better, whether to keep my current job, or once again throw myself in at the deep end, go to another country and start a new chapter of my aviation book. Step by step. Slowly but surely I stayed on the top.

FINALLY

After the mighty Ice Age, ice began to crack some time ago. At least for me. For my life. For my career, for my further professional development, the next step. Great joy, warmth in the heart, an outburst of euphoria and a new flame of hope. I got an offer that I couldn't reject. At the beginning, a bit of fear, doubt, reflection, is it for sure, because this is the end of another story, travel, moving, abandoning what I had and going to another, distant and oriental country. Despite everything, I made a clear decision. I'm in it. I open up to a new experience, broaden my horizons and spread my wings in a different corner of the world than before. Everything is agreed, contracts are signed, documents prepared... Ahoy adventure.

It was nice, it was beautiful, perfect, I started getting used to a new job, getting used to the new level of duties, getting used to new habits, I just started to sink into the new things that I became a part of and enjoy the new beginning, a new place in the hierarchy, and above all, an amazing adventure.

And then BOOM!

One of my former airlines asked if I would like to come back to them. Now. When I have a contract with another and I am satisfied. My first thought was, of course, "Ehhh, no, thank you so much for remembering, but I'm not interested." Absolutely, it would be completely true, if not... The offer of my dream base in my beloved Greece, the base that I asked for, I even begged from the very beginning, from the very interview, but this airline has never agreed to assign me to Athens... Until now. They wanted to give me my beloved country without asking, of their own free will.

Can you imagine how I felt?

Like someone hit me hard on my head, blinded me, and cut my heart in two. The place where I wanted to live and to fly from for several years, for which I fought like a lion, but was not given to me, has now passed, or rather flew in front of my nose. On the one hand, I was happy with my current job, and on the other... I just wanted to cry because I knew that I had lost the opportunity that I had been applying for from the very beginning of my existence in aviation.

Maybe someday I will be able to fly high in the sky from Greek territory, maybe it's not the time yet, but I hope one day I will be able to achieve this goal. For now, I will enjoy what I have and climb new skies like an eagle.
